IRNSS / NavIC

IRNSS stands for Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. The system is better known today as NavIC, short for Navigation with Indian Constellation.

NavIC is India’s own regional satellite navigation system. It was developed to provide positioning, navigation and timing services for India and the surrounding region. This makes it different from global systems such as GPS, Galileo, GLONASS or BeiDou, which are designed for worldwide coverage.

For many users, satellite navigation is mainly associated with positioning. In technical infrastructure, however, the timing aspect is just as important. Accurate satellite-based time can be used as a reference for synchronizing networks, systems and devices that depend on a stable time source.

This is where IRNSS/NavIC can become relevant for time synchronization projects, especially in regions or applications where the Indian regional satellite system should be considered as part of the GNSS concept.

NavIC provides different services, including an open service for civilian use and a restricted service for authorized users. The system uses dedicated satellite signals, including L5, and continues to develop as part of India’s navigation infrastructure.

For selected MOBATIME grandmasters, additional IRNSS/NavIC L5 support is available on request. This applies to the DTS 4150.grandmaster and DTS 4160.grandmaster. In both cases, IRNSS/NavIC is positioned as an additional GNSS reception option and should be evaluated according to the project requirements, device configuration and regional signal availability.
